PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION The primary objective of the Aboriginal Health Practitioner Traineeship is to support the development of foundational skills in delivering holistic primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families within a culturally respectful, family-centred framework. Under supervision, the Trainee will gain experience in assessing client health both in clinic and in home settings, with a focus on promoting self-care, self-management, and individual responsibility for health. Working closely with clinical and Aboriginal Health staff, the Trainee will participate in collaborative care efforts, fostering relationships with local service providers and the Indigenous community to encourage active involvement in health programs. The Trainee will engage in ongoing training, supervision, and mentorship, with a commitment to building both clinical expertise and cultural competency in Indigenous health care settings. In alignment with these objectives, the Trainee will also complete a Diploma of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, fully supported and funded, ensuring the knowledge and qualifications needed for a successful career in Aboriginal health care. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Individualized Clinical Delivery • Under supervision, provide quality Primary Health Care to individuals, families, and the community within the scope of training and established service protocols to support health outcomes. • Assist in conducting opportunistic and scheduled health assessments, and support clinical staff with client treatment within approved scope and delegated tasks in home and clinic settings. • Participate in pre-consultation checks for clients, gaining skills in initial health assessments. • Offer flexible support and guidance to individuals, families, and carers under supervision to help address their social, emotional, and physical needs. • Assist clinical staff with the coordination and delivery of health checks for children and adults (ages 5-99). • Support the promotion of the Victorian Immunization Schedule/Australian Immunization Register for community children, observing and assisting in immunization processes. • Help maintain a recall and reminder system for scheduled health checks, particularly for clients aged 5-99. • Maintain accurate client records and statistical data in line with procedures and program requirements under guidance, including session notes and communication records. • Attend and participate in regular clinical meetings, assisting in case management discussions for at-risk clients alongside the Aboriginal Health team. • Assist with frontline support and transportation of clients to medical appointments as required, under supervision. • Understand and assist with MBS claiming processes for eligible service encounters under the guidance of clinical staff. Organizational Support • Provide support to doctors and clinical staff to help meet the aims and objectives of the Aboriginal Health Service. • Build foundational skills in developing partnerships and networks with external agencies relevant to child and family support. • Contribute to the development and adaptation of educational materials, programs, and presentations. • Assist in organizing and participating in community events. • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, gaining experience in professional collaboration. • Support program staff in research, reporting, and documentation as needed. • Assist with the restocking of medical supplies in GP consulting and treatment rooms. • Aid in monitoring the vaccination fridge temperature, under guidance. • Help with reordering medical supplies and linen in collaboration with nursing staff. • Support clinical waste management by assisting with emptying clinical waste bins as required. • Assist in documenting and tracking client data and supporting the coordination of multidisciplinary care, particularly in dietetic and diabetes care services. Community Engagement • Build connections with relevant community groups, health professionals, and mainstream organizations under supervision. • Attend multidisciplinary inter-agency meetings with guidance to learn about community health collaboration. • Engage with Aboriginal communities and organizations to develop strong community links and share relevant information. • Participate in relevant seminars, expos, and community events to enhance skills in public health engagement. Self-Development • Participate in ongoing professional supervision as required by the standards governing your professional body. • Engage in regular supervision on client and program matters with the Team Leader. • Attend training and development sessions as required, actively pursuing growth in skills and knowledge. • Complete a Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, with full support and funding provided, as part of the traineeship’s structured learning pathway. • Identify and access support as required, including resources to balance study and work responsibilities effectively. • Manage own time and priorities with support, learning to balance professional responsibilities, study commitments, and development needs.
